10 Things We Know about Junkhearts

June 2nd, 2010 by Katie received Comments Off

After doing some digging, we are bringing you everything we know thus far about Junkhearts:
1. It has a low budget.
The film is reportedly only being made with a budget of £800,000, which, for the film industry, is not very big. Here’s what the film’s writer, Simon Frank, had to say about financing the movie:

A few weeks later we were in the throes of worst recession since the war. There hasn’t been a worse time in history to be looking for finance.

We were thrown a lifeline in the form of Microwave – a kind of X-factor style boot camp for movie scripts. There are ten projects looking for finance, but only enough funds for four.

Microwave school lasts a week – with a pitch at the end.

If it all goes well. If we hang together as a team. If our budget ads up, if our script develops in the right direction, if we make the right impression – then Junkhearts will go though to the green light board in November.

Then we will pitch again, against a whittled down group of projects.

2. There will be skateboarding.
Someone, presumably affiliated with the film, advertised on a British skateboarding forum for skateboarders:

We are shooting a low budget british film starring Eddie Marsan and we require about 5 skateboarders aged 16-23 to be showing off their skills in the background. We are shooting on Tuesday 8th jUNE from 1000am at a skate park in Ladbroke grove, London, and would require you for a few hours. We can offer food and expenses and the chance to be in a good british film with a great cast

So far, only one person has replied to the thread, so if you know someone who’d like to be a part of the movie, follow this link for more information.

3. Filming will take place over four weeks.
There’s not much to elaborate on here.

4. There will be parties, pubs, snooker, and streets.
According to an advertisement for movie extras (applications closed, sorry!), “[Extras] would be needed in various scenes, from party scenes, pub scenes, snooker halls, street scenes etc throughout our 4 week shoots. Unfortunately, we only have the budget to offer everyone expenses, but this will be a fun experience and [extras] get to be on screen in the cinema!

5. Tom will be working with some familiar faces.
Romola Garai, who will also be in the film, had a role in Vanity Fair, too. She played his mom.

6. And will probably play a drug dealing villain.
The main cast has been announced and the principal roles are as follows: Frank (a man in his 50′s), Lynette (a 17 year-old girl), Christine (a woman in her 30′s), and Danny (Lynette’s boyfriend). Since Tom is not neither in his 50′s nor a woman, it doesn’t seem like he could fit into any role besides that of Danny.

6. The film evolved from a press release by Shelter a UK-based charity which works to stamp out homelessness.
The film’s writer has a detailed explanation of how he wrote the film, and what inspired it on his organization’s blog. Though the original post is currently M.I.A., we bring you that one through the miracle of Google caching.

8. It was written by a really nice guy.
It seems, at least. Simon Frank helps NFPTweetup, an organization dedicated to helping charities and other non-profit organizations use Twitter to further their goals.

9. And will be directed by a doctor.
Tinge Krishnan was a doctor for three years before she pursued a degree in film at NYU and later established her own film company.

10. It’s based on a real problem.
The movie was originally titled “Cuckoo” because it’s about a practice known as “cuckooing,” which is where a drug dealer takes advantage of an unsuspecting victim.
