Tom was in November’s issue of Vogue to promote Pirate Radio. You can check out the photo below in our gallery. In the accompanying article, when Tom was asked about his days at school, he said, “Bad attitude, apathy, ambivalence. These things continue.” Read the entire thing after the jump.

Making Waves: Tom Sturridge

British newcomer Tom Sturridge brings a roguish charm (and the requisite floppy hair) to Richard Curtis’s Pirate Radio.

Sitting at an old New York bar wearing a T-shirt and a black knit cap pulled down over his shaggy brown hair, 22-year-old Tom Sturridge is cheerful if groggy after a late night. “I love this place,” he sighs, scanning a wall of vintage photographs. “I have never been here before, but I am definitely coming back with friends. Like tonight.”

The British actor got his start in a television adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels at age nine. “My father [Charles Sturridge] was the director, my mother [Phoebe Nicholls] was starring in it, and I think they just wanted their kid to come along,” he says. After bouncing around (and out of) a few private schools—“Nothing too romantic,” he says, wryly. “Bad attitude, apathy, ambivalence. These things continue”—he landed roles in Vanity Fair, Being Julia, and Like Minds. This fall he stars in Richard Curtis’s Pirate Radio, a film about an illegal rock-’n’-roll radio station anchored in the waters off England in the 1960s that has a venerable (and hilarious) cast, including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kenneth Branagh, and Bill Nighy.

For the most part, Sturridge is taking it all in stride, but he does get dazzled now and then. “I was doing the whole red-carpet thing in Scotland, and I felt a tap on my shoulder and there was Paul McCartney. We shook hands, and it was really great,” he says. “Two minutes later, I felt another tap on my shoulder. It was Brian O’Driscoll.” His eyes widen. “He’s the captain of the Irish rugby team. I shook his hand in complete shock, you know? It was, like, the biggest person I ever met.”

Kind of.

In this interview from German website Cineman, Tom and “Pirate Radio” director Richard Curtis talk a little bit about filming. Watch especially for their conversation at 3:07.

We are having problems embedding the video, so please view it at the source, HERE.

The page is in German but the video controls are universal (i.e. the triangle button is still ‘play’).

Talulah Riley, who plays Tom’s character’s love interest in Pirate Radio/The Boat That Rocked has been asked questions about what it was like to work with Tom in several interviews. In those interviews, she reveals that she knew Tom prior to working on Pirate Radio; the two met through Robert Pattinson, with whom she worked on the unreleased short, “The Summer House.” Ms. Riley’s latest movie is The Inception, written and produced by Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight). You can catch The Inception in theaters this July. Here is some of what she had to say about Tom:

“He’s one of my best friends, so we knew each other before we did this. So, it was kind of quite strange actually, because we’ve never kissed or done anything vaguely, you know, in that direction. So to be suddenly facing and having to lie naked with him under a sheet…it was pretty, pretty…uhm, not awful (laughs), but different.”

Click to read the rest and see what prank Talulah wanted to play on Tom and how they prepared for their scenes.

“ How did you cross paths with [Tom] in the first place?

TL: I worked with a guy called Robert Pattinson, who is Tom’s best friend, and then he introduced us… (Starts to laugh) …and then Tom and I became best friends!”

In a separate interview, she states:

“I’ve known Tom for years and years, he’s one of my best friends, so that…that was actually quite strange to work with Tom and to be his love interest. And I didn’t really want Richard to tell him that I’d been cast in the role, ‘cause I just thought it’d be hysterical to turn up and freak him out on the first day of filming, but Richard actually told him the night before. So Tom called me and said, “You’re doing what?” I think he was kind of cross with me. Yeah, it was funny to have to kiss him and stuff.”

And in another interview, she talks a bit about Rob and also the apprehension that both she and Tom had when filming the love scenes:

“Q: How did that compare with your love scenes with Tom Sturridge?

Talulah Riley: Love scenes with Tom were awkward because he’s like my best friend. We’ve known each other forever and ever, before the film.

Q: How did you meet?

Talulah Riley: Through Robert Pattinson who I went with.

Q: Twilight.

Talulah Riley: Twilight Rob Pattinson as he is now known which is really weird. That’s really bizarre. Anyway, yeah, so it was just kind of funny because obviously we’d always really avoided ever being like, I never kissed him or anything like that but it was kind of like a When Harry Met Sally way. There’s always been that so then we actually had to just hop into bed together. It was awkward.

Q: Was the condom scene all scripted?

Talulah Riley: That was all scripted, yeah. And actually, the kiss was meant to be really scripted because I was so freaked out about it that Emma, who is the script editor and Richard’s partner, she had me in the other room. She’s going, “It’s going to be fine. It’s going to be fine.” We literally worked out blow by blow the kiss that I do. So we’re like, “Then we’ll do that, and then we’ll do that.” So okay, great, I got it. Then Tom would come, he literally would come nowhere near me. So there’s this scene in the film where they pan up and our bodies are like there. That’s because that was literally how nervous we were that we were supposed to do a full on kind of passionate thing. We ended up just doing [a peck] like that.”

The German website, Film Reporter, caught up with Tom and Talulah Riley during their European press tour for The Boat That Rocked/Pirate Radio/Radio Rock Revolution/Whatever-they-marketed-it-as-in-your-country. The interview is pretty lengthy and I translated it myself from the original German. So for all of you German readers: I apologize in advance for butchering the translation.

**This was translated from the original German completely and originally by the site. If you use this translation and post elsewhere (like locked Livejournal communities) please do the professional thing and credit as well as link back. Thank you**

Here is a bit of the interview:

Ricore: When was the last time you saw Robert Pattinson?

Sturridge: He’s my best friend. We see each other often. I’m proud of his success with Twilight.

Ricore: Would you be interested, in the future, to work with him? It’s planned for you two.

Sturridge: I spend so much time with Rob already, I can’t work with him, too [laughs].

And after being asked about the free love of the 60′s:

Sturridge: My definition of ‘free love’ isn’t that you sleep with a dozen people every night. It’s that, for example, I can meet a girl here in Germany, fall in love with her, and I’m allowed to marry her. Before, my parents would’ve eventually said, “No, you have to marry a nice, English girl!” It’s not about mass-orgies.

Read the rest after the jump!

At 23 years old, Tom Sturridge and Talulah Riley are fledglings in Richard Curtis’ Music-Comedy “Radio Rock Revolution” [Pirate Radio/The Boat that Rocked] next to established actors like Philip Seymour-Hoffman, Nick Frost, and Bill Nighy. In the interview on the occasion of the Germany premiere in Berlin both appeared to be on opposing teams: Tom is the wild child, while the rather dignified Riley drinks no alcohol, is engaged and wants to marry soon.
Ricore: How do you like Berlin?

Talulah Riley: Fantastic. I am still a little tired, because we went to bed around three in the morning.

Tom Sturridge: Wow, you were really honest about that.

Ricore: How did you like the music in “Radio Rock Revolution”?

Riley: I really liked it, Tom likewise. We discussed it a lot. It’s so diverse. There are so many influences coming together. What do you think, Tom?

Sturridge: This music is the definitive music of our time. One can rarely hear a band of the present without making references to the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones or the Beatles. That is damn great because young people in the 1960′s hardly listened to the music that was made 40 years earlier. People didn’t dance to music of the 1920’s. If you go to a club today, the chances are good that you’ll hear “Gimme Shelter” or “Come on” by the Stones, or, not as often, a song of Van Morrison’s.

Ricore: In your generation is there an equivalent to pirate radio? A rebellious movement?

Sturridge: I think the MySpace-concept. Naturally, it’s also rebellious in some ways: there, young people from young people can exchange their opinions of music quickly and over large distances. In London and also elsewhere where young musicians became enormously successful without the aid of the music industry. They reached that in that they made advertisements of themselves at other young people over the Internet. They built up a fan base first and then the music industry paid attention to them.

Ricore: Where do you see disadvantages in the new services like Facebook or MySpace?

Sturridge: I think they’re great. When you look at “Radio Rock Revolution,” where 25 million people listened to one and the same radio program, where one man played one song. People were united and the next morning at school or at work everybody talked about the same thing. Through that came a change from the past- if everyone is united. Today everything is split up by different media. If you ask young people in school today, you’d probably get even more different answers, which is also great, in its own way. What do you think about it, Talulah?

Riley: The ban on pirate radio was interesting. Today you’re allowed and you can hear or see everything. So you can’t rebel as much. Also music as a product was so new and awesome then. Like Tom already said, today Rock and Pop is everywhere.

Ricore: How did you rebel against your parents?

Sturridge: With hard drugs.

Riley: He’s only kidding!

Ricore: What experiences have you had with drugs?

Sturridge: The family background which I come from is very liberal and rather left focused. So it’s damn hard to rebel against my parents. Being nice is kind of rebellious [laughs].

Ricore: Why did Director Richard Curtis pick you?

Riley: [answering for Tom] Because he is wonderful! Look at him, he’s great. I’m sorry. I’ll let you answer that yourself.

Sturridge: Why did he pick you?

Ricore: The question is for both of you.

Sturridge: I don’t know. The difference between us and the other actors from “Radio Rock Revolution” is that they’re already well-known and established. Richard Curtis sought them out and then phoned them. With the two of us it was the reverse. We had to persuade him. I had so many auditions. Maybe he picked me because he had already met me so many times and felt like now he had to take me.

Ricore: The film talks place in the wild sixties, where free love was practiced. What do you think of this concept?

Sturridge: Uh, well Talulah is getting married soon.

Riley: Yeah, I’m engaged and will be married soon. I have never tried ‘free love.’ But I think Tom can tell you more about that [grins].

Sturridge: I’m not really sure what you mean by the concept of ‘free love.’ You could call what exists today ‘free love.’ You can be with anyone one you want and say to that person “I love you” and hope that they reciprocate. Aside from that, I don’t know what you mean by ‘free love.’

Ricore: I mean that Woodstock/Hippie thing.

Sturridge: I’m familiar with the image of free love that you mean. In principle free love is the fact that someone can love whomever they want, right?

Ricore: Isn’t it more about sex?

Sturridge: A person can have sex with whomever they want, as long as the other one agrees to it. In the 1960’s and in my parents’ time, the more conservative 50’s, that was impossible. You weren’t allowed to have sex with the person you loved, because they were from another social class, family, or race. That’s the advantage of living in the 21st century. We can love and sleep with anyone we want.

Ricore: Isn’t that also sad, because relationships aren’t worth as much as they used to be?

Riley: No. For example, I’m engaged. Every person can do what he wants.

Ricore: What did you learn from the established actors in “Radio Rock Revolution”?

Sturridge: I learned that it’s a myth when people say: It’s disappointing to meet your hero. These are outstanding people. The great thing in particular about Bill Nighy, but also Richard Curtis and Philip Seymour Hoffman is that they are really upstanding people. I mean in the sense of moral integrity. I learned less about how to act in front of the camera, but much more about how a person should behave as a human being. I seldom use the word, but I’d call it dignity.

Ricore: What do you think of that?

Riley: Tom summed it up well. Richard Curtis chose enormously talented people. Who are not only good actors, but also good people. That is important for teamwork. We laughed and played jokes both in front of the camera and behind it.

Ricore: Have you gotten to know any new music through the film?

Riley: I liked the music of the 60’s beforehand. It’s a little bit like with Christmas songs. Even though you only hear it once a year, you know all the lyrics by heart. I knew all the songs although I hadn’t always known who sang what. That was what was impressive about Richard Curtis; he knew every single song and everything about every band. He said then: that’s the so-and-so and they released the song in 1963. That was very interesting.

Ricore: What is your favorite music?

Sturridge: Van Morrison. I have an obsession with him.

Ricore: Also his older stuff?

Sturridge: More so, although I also like one from his new compilation. “Astral Weeks” and “Veedon Fleece” are my favorite albums to listen to, which are also his oldest.

Ricore: After the music of the 1960’s, I’d like to know your opinion on the colorful clothes that you had to wear in the film.

Riley: I thought they were awesome, although I wouldn’t want to wear them every day. The people would give me strange looks. I had this great coat with big arms that was very short and pretty.

Ricore: After this whole press thing do you have free time in Berlin?

Riley: We have one hour.

Sturridge: Yesterday we all went on a boat tour together. I liked Berlin’s modern architecture.

Ricore: Which of Berlin’s Clubs did you go to yesterday?

Sturridge: The premiere party took place in Titty Twister. We were in the VIP-section, which I thought was kind of stupid.

Ricore: Why?

Sturridge: How can someone party when they’re separated from
the crowd? We eventually overcame it. We didn’t want to feel different from the others.

Ricore: You wouldn’t want to be a famous actor?

Sturridge: No!

Ricore: How hard is it as a young person, to become an actor? How do you set yourselves apart from the others?

Riley: You shouldn’t compare yourself to others. That’s very dangerous. You should just go to lots of auditions. Naturally there’s competition, but that’s okay, right Tom?

Sturridge: Yeah. It comes down to what you want from life. What concern is money, I must say, when right now I don’t have any kids and only need enough money for rent, food, and beer. I don’t have to earn money and can wait until I’m offered the right opportunities.

Ricore: From this position, would you also not take rolls in cheap action films or animated films?

Sturridge: Have you heard of “Watership Down”? That is an animated film and it belongs with the most beautiful films that I know. With a film like that, I’d be very lucky. As far as action films are concerned, I don’t believe that I’d be appropriate for that. Who wants to see a skinny [untranslatable: perhaps guy?] like me in an action film? That would be implausible. I want to make projects that are a good match for me.

Ricore: When was the last time you saw Robert Pattinson?

Sturridge: He’s my best friend. We see each other often. I’m proud of his success with Twilight.

Ricore: Would you be interested, in the future, to work with him? It’s planned for you two.

Sturridge: I spend so much time with Rob already, I can’t work with him too [laughs].

Riley: [dismisses what Tom says] Ah, working together [with Rob] is really fine with him.

Ricore: I want to jump from Twilight to Radio Rock Revolution once more. How was it to shoot on a boat?

Riley: Fantastic. What’s better than shipping off to see in the sunshine? Besides that, the entire time the 60’s music ran and a range of the nicest people that anyone could meet were on board.

Ricore: Was it like the best time of your life so far?

Riley: In some ways, yes. Eventually the good behavior didn’t last all day. I treasure it also, to be able to take a boat trip in Berlin or to ride a bike through Amsterdam, like we’ve done on this short press tour.

Sturridge: [mocking her] I almost had to cry over our good fortune.

Riley: But that’s how it was!

Ricore: The girls in the film only come aboard on occasion, for the pleasure of the men. How was that for you?

Sturrige: Did I have a problem from a feminist point of view? Not really. I think it’s about fun. Eventually it was also so that the men would always show the women the best sites, when they arrived. Naturally, I had a problem as my character, as far as going to bed with just everyone. I didn’t treat the character of Carl like that. But in the end, it was about the sixties.

Ricore: You had a very entertaining sex-scene with Nick Frost. How much alcohol did you drink beforehand?

Riley: I don’t drink alcohol, so I played it sober! Tom on the other hand… [laughs].

Sturridge: What?

Riley: It was very amusing and there are many outtakes of that scene.

Sturridge: Did I really just hear you had sex with Nick Frost?

Riley: No, I had a sex-scene with Nick Frost.

Sturridge: But we already filmed that!

Riley: Then it’s already in the outtakes [laughs]. In the beginning every time we were in bed together we were fully clothed.

Sturridge: They definitely cut that out.

Riley: No, it’s in the movie.

Ricore: You really don’t drink?

Riley: No.

Sturridge: She’s very odd.

Ricore: How important was radio in your childhood?

Sturridge: I was born in the 1980’s. At that time there were lots of different radio stations. Beginning in the 1990’s, I became
aware of radio and listened to it. John Peel was alive back then. That was my closest tie to what happened on the boat. One of my earliest memories in that sense was how important the charts were. Today I listen to other things on the radio. Today I listen to less music and more discussion. With the iPod, everything changed.

Ricore: What was your first record?

Sturridge: [Laughs] My first record was “Gangstas Paradise” by Coolio. I thought I was a little gangsta rapper back them. I don’t remember anymore, why I really bought it.

Ricore: There are worse records.

Sturridge: I never want to hear that song again.

Ricore: And what about you?

Riley: I really don’t know anymore.

Sturridge: Come up with something!

Riley: It would be a lie.

Ricore: “Take That”?

Riley: That was definitely not it.

Ricore: How dangerous is it, as a young actor, to be exploited?

Sturridge: It’s no more dangerous than in any other occupation. I think it’s dangerous that you ask questions where someone then believes that it’s more than just an opinion.

Riley: You’re only speaking for yourself.

Sturridge: I don’t want for someone to think that what I say is important and right. I have neither the background nor the education for that. I think it’s dangerous we people move from their position and think what I say is interesting.

Ricore: You don’t see yourself as an example?

Sturridge: No, I need an example, myself. I have to find my position in life first.

Ricore: Is it true that you always carry a little black book around with you?

Sturridge: Yeah yeah.

Ricore: Is it a day planner?

Sturridge: No. I write little thoughts and things in it. I can’t fit it all in my head. The only reason why I hope that I don’t die soon is the following: I don’t want for someone to find my book and think about what an uninteresting person I really was. Someday I’ll burn this book.

Ricore: Thank you very much for the interview.

Back in November, Tom did an interview with “Ain’t It Cool News” to promote Pirate Radio. Here are a few choice excerpts:

Interviewer: A lesser man might have been intimidated by the caliber of people that you got to work with on this film.

Tom: I am that lesser man.

On whether or not he felt like ‘one of the guys’ on set:

“The fundamental moment I remember was on the second weekend, we were out at a kind of bar in Weymouth where we were shooting, and for reasons I still don’t understand, I got thrown out of the bar…”

On meeting Philip Seymour Hoffman:

“I remember sort of giving him the cup of tea and he shakes my hand or something, and I turn around to go towards the door and in my head I was going, “F***, I’ve just done my first scene with Philip Seymour Hoffman; this is amazing.” Suddenly I heard this kind of [deep scruffy voice] “Carl!” I was holding the door handle and suddenly just going “S***, I’m about to improvise with Philip Seymour Hoffman,” and then he turned around and did the slap on the ass thing, and that’s the smile of Tom Sturridge’s surprise and delight.”

You can read the rest of the article after the jump.

Tom Sturridge is probably a name most of you are not familiar with. Hell, I wasn’t until I saw writer-director Richard Curtis’ PIRATE RADIO (a.k.a. THE BOAT THAT ROCKED), and I’d actually unknowingly seen some of his previous work, including supporting roles in FAIRY TALE: A TRUE STORY; VANITY FAIR, directed by Mira Nair; BEING JULIA, opposite Annette Bening; and LIKE MIND, opposite Toni Collette. His father is the acclaimed British director Charles Sturridge, who directed the original “Brideshead Revisited” mini-series, as well as the films A HANDFUL OF DUST, WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD, the aforementioned FAIRY TALE, SHACKLETON, and three episodes of the exceptional HBO series “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.”

The younger Sturridge plays Carl, a moderately innocent young lad who is foisted upon a boat filled with deviant DJs in 1960s Britain (or more specifically, the North Sea off the coast of Britain). Carl is our eyes and ears. He’s discovered the sights and especially sounds of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station pumping the greatest rock and R&B tunes into the country because the BBC won’t do it. In real life, they were celebrities, they were heroes, they were doing God’s work, and the film is a tribute to the men who introduced their countrymen to these great songs. And in PIRATE RADIO, Carl has a front-row seat to all the festivities. And according to the press, he’s best buddies with TWILIGHT’s Robert Pattinson, something I did not bring up because I don’t give a shit. That said, I think that Tom Sturridge does a solid job in PIRATE RADIO, and he’s about as nice a man of 24 as you’re likely to meet. The experience of making this movie with all of these great talents clearly had an impact on him, and he seems utterly grateful just to have been a part of the whole experience. Please enjoy the up-and-coming Tom Sturridge…

Capone: I noticed that you’ve got a movie called WAITING FOR FOREVER coming out with Jaime King. I just came from a set visit for a movie she’s starring in, and we talked about WAITING FOR FOREVER a bit.

Tom Sturridge: She’s amazing.

Capone: Your two characters have the same last name. Are you brother and sister or husband and wife?

TS: She plays my brother’s wife.

Capone: Oh, okay. I do want to talk about that in a minute. But let’s talk about PIRATE RADIO first. A lesser man might have been intimidated by the caliber of people that you got to work with on this film.

TS: I am that lesser man.

[Both laugh]

Capone: Did it take some getting used to, though?

TS: Completely and in a very simple way, they were people who I had admired and respected and grown up watching, so it was intimidating. Fortunately, my character was a boy who was sent to live amongst people who would have intimidated him, who were his heroes at the time and, therefore, anything I was feeling was apt and useful.

Capone: Do you remember anyone doing anything or saying anything that kind of made you realize you were one of this group of guys who just wanted to make a great movie, and there was no caste system.

TS: The fundamental moment I remember was on the second weekend, we were out at a kind of bar in Weymouth where we were shooting, and for reasons I still don’t understand I got thrown out of the bar and I remember Rhys Ifans charged out and put his arm around me and said “If you can’t drink in there, then I won’t drink in there,” and took me somewhere else. That’s when I felt at ease.

Capone: The scene near the beginning where Philip Seymour Hoffman kind of pulls you into the broadcast booth, and I think hugs you, and then as you are turned away he kind of slaps your ass. Was there a hint of a surprised look on your face when he did that?

TS: That was genuinely the first time I met Philip. We had been shooting going on three weeks or something and he arrived and so he hadn’t been part of the preparation process. Not that late, but just late enough to when we all had sort of slowly bonded. And I remember that day he was shooting first, and I turned up at lunch time or something, and so we still hadn’t had that morning introduction where I’m sure everyone bowed down and went to look for his Oscar and stuff in his dressing room.

Capone: Does he travel with it?

TS: I think some people were hoping he did. But they were shooting a scene, and I wasn’t supposed to be in that scene, and they were just shooting a little bit of him DJing and Richard [Curtis] decided as I came on set in costume, and he just said “Why don’t you go in and take him a cup of tea while we are shooting?” So literally it was the first moment I met him, and I remember sort of giving him the cup of tea and he shakes my hand or something, and I turn around to go towards the door and in my head I was going “Fuck, I’ve just done my first scene with Philip Seymour Hoffman; this is amazing.” Suddenly I heard this kind of [deep scruffy voice] “Carl!” I was holding the door handle and suddenly just going “Shit, I’m about to improvise with Philip Seymour Hoffman,” and then he turned around and did the slap on the ass thing, and that’s the smile of Tom Sturridge’s surprise and delight.

Capone: Just watching all of these guys though, what do you remember admiring about the way that they worked individually? Obviously they all work differently.

TS: It’s difficult. I think acting is such a kind of intangible job. It’s very difficult to articulate what you do and very specifically what other people do and so it was more… I learned more of how they behaved as people off set, and, I don’t know, Bill Nighy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Nick Frost are the kind of people you want to be when you grow up. It’s rare when you can ascribe the word “Dignity” to an actor. Do you know what I mean? They are dignified men and it was just learning how to be a grown up was my abiding memory as opposed to how they did their stuff, because they did it very differently and very personally in the same way that everybody does their thing.

It’s quite rare when you have a film where there are seven or eight principle characters in the room at the same time, and I suppose what was interesting was seeing how people managed that. The way it was shot was hand held and a lot of the time with two or three cameras going, and so no one knew if it was their moment, because the cameras would just follow what they were most interested in, which meant that it was fascinating to see comic egos battling it out to try to essentially seduce the camera operator into turning towards them. [Laughs] Fortunately my job was just to be a voyeur of everybody.

Capone: You really are the audience’s entry into this world, and that’s a lovely sort of extra burden put on your shoulders–to take us to the right places and ask the right questions. Did that even enter your mind while you were making it? The audience is looking at it all through you.

TS: Because of that I was put in a very relaxing position, because it was just like swimming in it. I just kind of sat back and reacted to whatever extraordinary things everybody was doing, which was really a pleasurable experience.

Capone: In addition to being an acting education, was this experience also a music education for you, or did you kind of know this music already?

TS: You have to grow up in a basement to not know The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and stuff, but Richard has a kind of freakish, encyclopedic knowledge of every piece of pop music from 1956 to the present day and so he couldn’t help but educate everyone.

Capone: Were you even familiar with the pirate radio phenomenon growing up? Were you shocked that this even happened?

TS: I had absolutely no idea about it, especially being a young person now and my relationship with music is so much about how easily accessible it is. I can listen to any type of music on the internet in moments, be it a girl in New Zealand playing the guitar in her bedroom or a new Radiohead album or whatever, whereas the idea that young people found it difficult to find the music they love is kind of completely alien.

Capone: And not just young people, according to the movie, it’s just about every age was listening to these stations. It was all they really had. I assume you auditioned for this part, what do you remember about that process?

TS: It was long. I auditioned maybe four times and the thing that obviously differentiates me from everyone in that picture basically is that they were all asked to be in it, and I had to persuade them. It was the same as every audition process–as you get closer you look at things in more detail, and I think it was just getting to know Richard and I don’t think I have really ever auditioned more for anything than I did for this. The last of which I basically did every scene in the film in a small theater with somebody filming me, and we pretty much read everything which was something I’ve never done before, but it was great.

Capone: Probably the only thing you and I have in common is I have also been in a bathroom with Nick Frost, but not naked. The last time he was here with HOT FUZZ, the hotel or somebody sent him a birthday cake…

TS: And he put the cake in the toilet?

Capone: Yeah.

TS: I have heard it from him where at every hotel they are at, Nick has to put cake in his toilet or something. I think there’s a website with photographs of cakes in different toilets all across the world.

Capone: That scene of the two of you naked in the bathroom had to be either terrifying or liberating or both.

TS: Listen, it’s a beautiful thing to stand naked in front of Nick Frost and embrace him and feel his stomach hairs against your chest [laughs]. But I don’t think anyone can say that they are completely confident in taking their clothes off in front of a bunch of people, but it was fun and Nick is such an easy person to feel safe around and we just had a great time. If anything, the difficult thing about it was it was a tiny little room, and so we literally were scrunched up between each other.

Capone: The whole film seemed like it was set in a series of tiny little rooms. How much of the movie did you actually shoot on the boat?

TS: It was 50-50, with six weeks on the boat and six weeks in the studio.

Capone: Did the boat come first or the studio?

TS: The studio came first, but the first thing we did, was everybody lived on the boat for four days. That was when everyone acclimated with each other. I mean, we did shoot a lot of it on the boat, and it’s stupid, but you don’t have to fake it when the water is moving and you are falling over a little bit and bustling through small corridors and sitting in tiny bedrooms and trying to work our way through.

Capone: Speaking of Nick, I actually own the DVD of THE BOAT THAT ROCKS, so I have seen all of the deleted scenes. The scene where he is cracking eggs over your head borders on cruelty. There’s really no other way to describe it.

TS: When they cut that out of the film, I mean, we literally shot that for a day. It was a difficult experience, and I think one of the reasons they took it out, was because he does kind of come across as quite an evil man. Apparently egg yoke is good for your hair, so…

Capone: That’s what Richard says on the introduction to that scene on the DVS is that your hair has been shiny and bouncy ever since.

TS: It was. It was beautiful.

Capone: Did you get a sense while you were shooting this that you were kind of just playing a part of Richard’s rock and roll fantasy world?

TS: Completely. Some people are reacting to the film and are kind of like “That never happened on Radio Caroline,” which I think is just totally ridiculous. My notion, and I think Richard will agree with this, when we were working on it and before was that Richard listened to these radio stations when he was a child. That boy at the beginning, when he switches on his radio, that was Richard, and this film is his childhood fantasy of what was going on at the other end of that transistor radio. It’s not in any way supposed to be a historical representation of Radio Caroline. It’s about a young person’s dream of crazy, magical, foolish things, which were going on between his heroes. The reality of it was they were a bunch of grumpy men sitting on a boat getting a bit ill for six months and playing the best music in the world, but when people go like “God, they never had girls on the boat!” and stuff like that, it’s like, come on…

Capone: I didn’t know if it was accurate or not; it doesn’t matter. It feels like this is the inside of someone’s head with the greatest soundtrack ever made. I feel the same way about something like AMERICAN GRAFFITI or ALMOST FAMOUS, but it doesn’t matter if that’s what happened, that’s kind of how they remember it, and that’s the beauty of it. Do you remember any other scenes where you were just like “I can’t believe that didn’t make it”?

TS: Not so much scenes I was in. There was basically more… I think the first cut of this film was like six hours long.

[Both Laugh]

Capone: The number keeps growing every time I hear about it. It’s gone from three to four to six hours

TS: There was a rumor, which is almost definitely not true, that while they had just finished shooting THE DARK KNIGHT, and some of the people who were developing the film were picking up the film everyday from set, and there was a rumor that we had shot more rolls of film than THE DARK KNIGHT. I think that was just the joke that everyone was making, but there was so much.

Capone: So was there anything in particular?

TS: I remember there was a sequence of the stag night, which some of it is in the English version I think, but that was kind of a really long… I remember we shot it in Soho, in London where I used to live, and it was really fun doing something in your streets and working outside of your front door. I was just really nostalgic about it.

Capone: That’s the scene that is expanded in the outtakes to show when they go to Abbey Road and Phil Hoffman gives a phenomenal speech about the Beatles that is my favorite of all of the outtakes.

TS: It’s a beautiful speech. It’s so sad that it got cut.

Capone: And knowing what Richard thinks of the Beatles, I can’t believe he took it out, but I’m glad it’s there and I got to see it. Talk about how working on this film sort of sharpened your improvisational skills, because it didn’t really seem like you had any choice if you wanted to keep up.

TS: Yeah, completely. The way it was done… It was obviously very clearly scripted–it is Richard Curtis–but the moment the scene had finished, we would just carry on, and so basically you always felt in a safe position because you had done six minutes of a scene from the script, so you knew were you were going. It wasn’t like he put us in a room and said “Be funny” or “Make sure that we understand that he loves her.” We came from a strong, solid position and then people would just riff and like I was saying before, because I’m like the eyes, it was really easy to just enjoy the experience. I never felt like I had to be a protagonist in this. Do you know what I mean?

Capone: Yeah. What did you think about having Emma Thompson playing your mother?

TS: That was great.

Capone: “Yes, please.”

TS: She was probably the person I was most terrified of, only because she only worked with me for a couple of days and she came halfway through the film and I didn’t have any time to acclimatize myself. It was literally “Bang. Let’s do this.” They were quite important scenes I think, but it was amazing working with her. She’s good. [laughs]

Capone: Was it strange when you finally saw whatever cut of the film you saw first, to see all of Kenneth Branagh’s scenes? You guys had nothing to do with that.

TS: They had shot that first, and it’s really weird. I got the feeling that they all felt a bit jealous, because everyone else was having the fun on the boat, and they kind of spent their two weeks pushing out the more serious aspect of it. But, it was good to see some of that and to watch something you have no idea what it is.

Capone: I wanted to talk a little bit more about Bill Nighy, because the man is practically royalty as far as I’m concerned.

TS: I feel like such an idiot on all of these interviews, because I am constantly saying how amazing it was to work with these people. But one of Richard’s great talents is bringing together such an extraordinary group, and however he did it, secretly or not, allowing a synergy to form by creating the courteous atmosphere, which is about feeling safe and loved and okay to just do whatever you think the best thing to do in a situation and yeah, it was extraordinary working with Bill.

Capone: This film feels so different from everything else Richard has done before, because it’s not about relationships necessarily. It’s about a different kind of relationship. But the subject matter he’s chosen makes it feel like his most personal film.

TS: There isn’t a figurehead to it who you put your heart into. There are different things happening all of the time, and people take different things from it and I think it is maybe one of his most personal films.

Capone: Tell me about what you’ve got coming up, aside from the one we talked about before, WAITING FOR FOREVER.

TS: In London, I just finished a play, which was the first play I have ever done. I just finished that like a week ago and I think that might be going somewhere else. I think that will be the next thing I do, and then WAITING FOR FOREVER comes out at Sundance.

Capone: I was going to ask you if it had any kind of release planned.

TS: I think it’s Sundance, although I haven’t spoken to the producers in a while.

Capone: You were saying before that you are taking the play somewhere else?

TS: Yeah. It has yet to be decided where.

Capone: What’s it called?

TS: It’s called PUNK ROCK. It’s about a school shooting. It’s been the most amazing experience of my life, because I didn’t go to drama school and I didn’t do acting at school and it was really weird to realize there’s a different way of living your life, doing theater. I think it was just a really good play.

Capone: So you don’t have another film lined up at this point?

TS: There are things, but I don’t believe literally, until you are at the wrap party of a film, over the last couple of years, the way the industry is, I don’t think you can say.

Capone: Who do you play in WAITING FOR FOREVER?

TS: Well, it’s about a homeless street performer who is kind of stalking a girl, not necessarily malevolently, but the film is about him revealing that he’s been doing this for years, and how they resolve that situation.

Capone: Who is the girl?

TS: Rachel Bilson. And Richard Jenkins is in it playing her father. Blythe Danner is in it. It was really a totally different experience from this, in that it was filmed in Utah and was very low budget. We shot it in like 21 days or something compared to [PIRATE RADIO] where at the end it was like 14 weeks. It was really difficult actually. It was one of those things where I remember waking up every morning looking at what I had to achieve in the day and not imagining being able to achieve it, which was strange but invigorating in the end.

Capone: Speaking of women, in PIRATE RADIO, what was it like on those days where there were women on the set? [Laughs]

TS: It was the most amazing thing and almost dangerous for them, because it was like them turning up at a prison, except we were not behind bars, and so we would attack the moment they arrived.

Capone: Attack with your charm, I hope.

[Both Laugh]

TS: Well sometimes and sometimes with other things, but it was brilliant. Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley, Emma Thompson. It was a good group of women to have around.

Capone: I hope nobody attacked Emma Thompson.

TS: Emma Thompson can look after herself.

[Both Laugh]

Capone: Well, thank you so much. This was great.

TS: Thank you. It was really nice meeting you.

As the Tom-related news dwindles, we’ve scoured the depths of the internet for news. And there isn’t any, per se.

But, an article from Interview magazine, although old, is an interesting read. It includes this quote: “Once, my 10-year-old cousin was driving the car, and we were charged by 10 elephants.” Perhaps Tom’s cousin will be giving Rob advice on his (alleged) upcoming movie. Lax parenting and angry, endangered species not intriguing enough for you? How about this one: “If we did this interview next week, I’d say, ‘Listen, motherf*****, I’m playing Batman tomorrow!”

After all, that is how you have to talk to Christian Bale.

The article isn’t a fake, but it is weird. You can check out the rest of it, in all of its bizarre glory after the jump.

To take a breather from films, British actor Tom Sturridge ran among the lions. He returned some 14 months later from Botswana’s Okavango Delta, where he had been studying the animals with his cousins. “I wasn’t very brave or very helpful,” admits Sturridge, 22. “You drive to the toilet there. You don’t walk or you’ll be killed.” What he gained was a crash course in survival. “Once, my 10-year-old cousin was driving the car, and we were charged by 10 elephants,” Sturridge recalls. Compared with that trip, the actor’s other experiences have been slightly less terrifying-particularly shooting The Boat That Rocked alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman earlier this year. The film concerns pirate-radio operators in the ’60s; Sturridge stars as a young Turk mentored by a legendary DJ played by Hoffman. “He’s astonishing,” Sturridge says of his co-star. “If you’re an actor, he’s one of the people you want to work with before you die.” It’s been a few years since Sturridge got his break playing the son of Annette Bening’s character in 2004′s Being Julia. But he didn’t mind the hiatus. “I want to do good stuff, which basically means waiting a bit,” he says. Of course it’s all timing: “If we did this interview next week, I’d say, ‘Listen, motherfucker, I’m playing Batman tomorrow!’ ” -Michael Martin

Ok, as most of you know, Tom was in a recently released move called “The Boat That Rocked” aka “Pirate Radio”. If you haven’t seen it, we suggest you do at the earliest possible time, like right now would be good. :) Actually, you’ll have to wait, it doesn’t come out on DVD and Blu-ray until April 13th (I know, we’re excited for it to be released too). In the meantime, enjoy this little interview:

Isn’t he adorable?

Now, for his newest film. Tom plays Will Donner, who is happy to live his life, as long as he is with the love of his life. This movie is going to be shown at the Sedona International Film Festival this month on the 24th and 26th and looks like it is going to be very good! So, if any of you are able to make it there, check out this movie. You can buy tickets here. If anyone sees this film, and would like to review it, we will post your review. Submit your review to admin.thenetwork@gmail.com.

Tom’s career seems to be on the rise. This site is for fun and laughs, but we will also keep you up-to-date with news concerning his career from time to time. We wish the best for Tom and wish him lots of luck in his future endeavors

This was sent to us from Jess:

Have you heard this podcast from the Royal Theatre Exchange (Show #22/Oct 2009)?

There’s an interview with the playwright of Punk Rock and then there’s an excerpt of Tom in his role as William. His accent is great, but that’s the least of it. I’m so jealous of anyone who got to see this because he sounds so…I can’t explain it…powerful?…capable and in control in the role. I can’t believe it’s his first time on stage. I was thoroughly impressed when I heard him.
