“I cannot imagine being really famous”

By Nuria Furrer Tom Sturridge is like the nice boy next door. Why doesn’t he have as much success with relationships as he does with acting?

Tom Sturridge is sweet, very sweet. His uncombed and somewhat oily hair hidden under a cap, he had just indulged in a massage at the hotel, which for him is a bit. The 23 year-old smiles mischievously like the boy from next door. Whether he is staying in a suite at the Baur au Lac Hotel or in his home country, Great Britain, he is already treated like the “next big thing.” When you see him, you just want to hang out with him, drink a beer, and listen to good music.
In the “The Boat That Rocked,” Tom Sturridge plays the teenager Karl, whose mother sends him on a boat, where a group of fried DJs operate a pirate radio station. Fun, sex, and drugs, and plenty of Rock ‘n Roll await Karl.

Friday: Tom, the soundtrack from “The Boat That Rocked” really rocks! Was your own taste in music influenced by the sounds of the sixties?
Tom Sturridge:For me, the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, or Van Morrison were always the biggest. I grew up with this music. Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to Van Morrison. These guys have my full admiration, because without them there wouldn’t be the music of today.
Does the fashion of the sixties appeal to you as much as the music?
Look at me! [laughs] fashion doesn’t interest me, I never shop. This shirt belongs to a friend, the T-shirt was made by a friend of my sister’s, and the shoes, well, you see seem them. [Demonstrates his worn-out Nikes].

The film is hysterical. Did you also have fun shooting it?
Absolutely! We were constantly filmed by three cameras, so every joke we made is in the film to see, we improvised a lot and laughed a lot.
You had to auditions many times to get the role. How did you finally convince director Richard Curtis?
I don’t know, he had a bad day. [laughs]. I wanted this role at all costs because I wanted to shoot a film with Richard Curtis and all the big actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kenneth Branagh, and Emma Thompson. I’m so excited that I got it! Besides that, I desperately needed a Job.

Actually, Tom wanted to be a roof thatcher. The typical English straw roof fascinated him as a young boy: “My mother always had to stop if we drove past a house with a roof like that. One day I will learn how to do that.” An actor is what the son of producer Charles Sturridge and actress Phoebe Nicholls never wanted to be. “Out of rebellion,” he says. That he landed a film role anyway, was an accident. At 17, he asked the director István Szabó for a little role in the comedy “Being Julia” with Annette Bening. Tom said that because he thought the director was really cool and interesting, the then thought: Hey, being an actor is cool, then you’re free.

Which stars have inspired you as an actor?
No stars, instead just little everyday moments. For example when a girl grazes my elbow, or a friend plays his guitar for me.
How—for example, your best friend, the “Twilight” Star Robert Pattinson? You lived together in London—how was that?
That was a great time. We had a really normal apartment life; we traded our clothes, talked about girls, and fought over who would do the cleaning.
Rob and Tom, a Dream Team for all women. What really happens, when you to rock a club together?
I have never in my life “rocked” a club. We’d rather go to bars and pubs. And then it’s really normal. Two guys go and drink beer and talk about crap.
You weren’t surrounded by screaming groupies?
No, thankfully not! Rob is well-known all over America. And in London at the moment no one on the street recognizes me.
That will certainly changed with “The Boat That Rocked.” Are you a little afraid of fame?
I can’t really imagine myself being famous. I don’t fear it though. All the same, I’ve seen through Rob that it’s not funny when the paparazzi stalk you. I would prefer that I can run through the streets of London undetected.
With a girl on your arm?
I don’t have a girlfriend. But I’d like one. If any Swiss girls are interested, they should let me know.
Is it tougher with the girls in London?
It’s always tough in love. Or—how many people have you loved already in your life?
Two. But are you sure you’ve been in love already?
Once. When I find my soul mate, I will build us a house with a thatched roof.
